Angioma - Definition, Causes, Symptoms and Treatment
Definition
Angiomas is a localized, benign, abnormal growth of blood vessels or lymph vessels in the skin or its underlying tissue or, rarely, in the central nervous system that are made up of small blood vessels . The vessels may also be dilated. These tumors can be located anywhere on the body but usually. They can occur almost anywhere on the body but usually develop on the trunk or near the surface of skin.
Angioma is one of the most commonly occurring of all skin lesions, it does not threaten the health or well-being of an individual and is removed generally for cosmetic reasons. The disease arise mostly in females and 80% are affected before they are 20 years old .
Types of Angioma:-
- Cherry angioma: A benign skin growth that appears as a small, smooth, cherry-red bump.
- Spider angiomas: A dilation of superficial capillaries with a central red dot from which blood vessels radiate.
- Senile angiomas: Composed of dilated capillaries.
Symptoms:-
Some possible symptoms of angioma includes as:-
- Birthmarks : The many birthmarks are actually angiomas and observed as Strawberry marks , Stork bites and Portwine stains.
- Skin lesion or growth: which is generally small pinhead size to about 1/4 inch in diameter, bright red and smooth in to touch.
- Angiomas are generally painless and harmless.
Causes:
The exact cause of angioma is uncertain, but the factors that helps to induce angioma are as:-- It may also be possible by an inherited condition.
- Angiomas are not dangerous or contagious.
- Alcoholic liver disease, causes spider angiomas.
- Cherry angiomas may bleed profusely, if injured.
Treatment:
The effective treatments for angioma are as:-
- Angiomas do not need to be treated unless they bleed or are bothering you.
- Watchful waiting : many newborn birthmarks disappear over time
- Cosmetics :may be used to hide angiomas.
- Electrodesiccation: It consists of touching the skin with an electric needle and destroying the blood vessels that make up the tumor.
- In an acute condition, the treatment can be achieved by Laser surgery.
- Liquid nitrogen therapy: Liquid nitrogen is a cold, liquefied gas that is sprayed on the skin .This works by freezing and destroying the tumor of blood vessels.
- Surgical excision may also be used for the treatment of angioma.
